Scandal in the USA

In an interview with Corriere a few months ago, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair said he had never wanted a mobile phone. “If I had to make a call, I would. But I am amazed at the ease with which many leaders today use WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal and various platforms to communicate. It doesn’t seem safe to me.” That was just six months ago.

Perhaps no one could have imagined a security breach of the magnitude of the US ministers' Signal chat app, in which classified information on acts of war in Yemen and beyond was accidentally shared with the editor of The Atlantic magazine.

The leak was discovered on Monday evening, March 24. “The world learned shortly after 2 p.m. (EST) on March 15 that the United States was bombing Houthi rebels in Yemen. I found out two hours ago,” Jeffrey Goldberg wrote in the magazine he works for. But what messages were written in this conversation?

The participants, according to the National Security Council , which confirmed the authenticity of the "Houthi PC Small Group" conversation, were 18 people.

Among them:

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth

Vice President JD Vance;

CIA Director John Ratcliffe;

White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles;

Councilor Stephen Miller;

Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth;

Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard;

Secretary of State Marco Rubio;

Special Envoy, Steve Witkoff.

"I hate the fact that we have to save Europe"/ What Vance, Hegseth and

At first, Goldberg thinks it's a hoax. Then, on Saturday, March 15, " in a supermarket parking lot ," he checks his Signal chat and finds communications about an attack on the Houthis; about two hours later, from Yemen, on the X platform, comes the first news of a bombing in the capital, Sanaa, with 53 dead. These are precisely the attacks that had been discussed a little earlier on the Signal app.

The dispute with Trump

From the account named “ JD Vance ” come – and this is news – the comments of disagreement with Trump: “I ’m not sure the president is aware of how inconsistent this is with his message on Europe at the moment,” he writes at 8.15am on March 14. “There is a further risk that we see a moderate or severe increase in oil prices. This is important, given where the economy is, etc.”

The president probably doesn't like this disagreement, because Vance's spokesman quickly clarified to the BBC on Monday that "the vice president unequivocally supports the foreign policy of this administration."

And then: "The President and the Vice President have had subsequent conversations on this issue, and they are in complete agreement."

Contempt for Europe

The Houthis' issue, which translates into a blockade of the Suez Canal and consequently of maritime trade in half the world, is above all a European issue, officials seem to underline.

In the same part of the conversation where Vance contradicts Trump, he explains that “3 percent of American trade passes through Suez, while 40% of European trade passes through it .” Intervention in the region, therefore, is a new “favor” for Europe.

"There's a real risk that the public won't understand this or why it's necessary. The strongest reason to do this is, as POTUS [the acronym that identifies the President of the United States of America] said, to send a message."

JDVance continues. “ I’m not sure the president is aware of how consistent this is with his message for Europe right now. There is a further risk that we will see a moderate or strong increase in oil prices. I am willing to support the consensus of the team and keep those concerns to myself. But there are strong arguments for pushing this back a month, to do the communication work, about why this is important, to see where the economy is, etc.”

This is the stance, while other considerations follow.

At 8:26, user “ John Ratcliffe ” writes “information that could be interpreted as related to current intelligence operations,” which Goldberg (journalist for “The Atlantic”) ignores.

At 8:27, “ Pete Hegseth ” chimes in. “ VP , I understand your concerns and fully support you in raising them with POTUS. Important considerations, most of which are hard to know how they will play out (economy, peace in Ukraine, Gaza, etc.). I think the messaging will be tough either way: no one knows who the Houthis are, so we need to focus on: 1) Biden failed and 2) Iran funded them.”

“Unë i mirëpres mendimet e tjera”.

Reagimi i Hillary Clinton

"We can't have anyone in the Oval Office who doesn't understand the meaning of the word confidential or classified ," Trump had attacked during that campaign.

On Monday afternoon, on social media, Hillary Clinton only published news of the leak with a sarcastic comment: "Are you kidding? " / Corriere della Sera
