A mayor in Mexico has been executed while eating a meal in a restaurant with his 14-year-old son.

The media reports that the event took place in the city of Morelia in the state of Michoacán. The victim of the murderous attack was Guillermo Torres, the mayor of Churumuco.

The 39-year-old died on the spot, while the 14-year-old was wounded by gunshots.

Torres was elected mayor in 2022, with the colors of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), but he recently left this faction and became part of the MORENA government.

The killing came amid campaigning ahead of the June 2 general election, in which some 20,000 local, state and federal offices are up for grabs, including the presidency and all seats in both houses of Congress.

It is noted that from the beginning of June 2023 to March 26, 2024, at least 50 people, including seven women, have been killed in violent election-related incidents, 26 of whom were part of the race.
