The Flensburg prosecutor's office is investigating repeated drone flights over Brunsbuttel. There are suspicions of "agent activity for sabotage purposes".
According to NDR information, drones were seen over Brunsbüttel, an industrial area for companies in the chemical and oil sectors, this Friday. Thus continues the series of unauthorized drone flights. Bild newspaper and Der Spiegel magazine first reported on Thursday that Germany, Brunsbüttel (Dithmarschen district), is believed to be the target of an espionage attack.
"The Flensburg public prosecutor's office confirms the initiation of preliminary proceedings for suspected agent sabotage activity in connection with repeated drone flights over critical infrastructure in Schleswig-Holstein," it said. No other details were given
The industrial estate, the LNG terminal and the decommissioned nuclear power plant are affected
The Itzehoe (Steinburg District) Police Department also said it had received information about potentially unauthorized drone flights and was investigating. According to their information, the drones were seen starting on August 8. According to the police, the Brunsbüttel industrial estate, the new LNG terminal and the closed Brunsbüttel nuclear power plant were affected. In the latter case, the no-fly zone was violated several times. The industry itself declined to comment on the incidents.
Schleswig-Holstein state station NDR reported on August 13 that police were investigating unannounced drone flights in the previous days. However, police initially believed these were unannounced private flights. Other drone flights followed, the last of which may have occurred Thursday night.
Federal and state authorities are also involved in the investigation. According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, responsible for the protection of critical infrastructure, the Federal Police and the Federal Criminal Police Office are providing support. According to a spokesman for the Ministry of Defense, the German Armed Forces are providing the police with radar data to complete the picture of the situation. This is part of the ongoing task of airspace security. A spokesman for the Bundeswehr Territorial Command in Berlin added that this administrative assistance has been provided since last Monday.
Security Expert: "This Can Get Dangerous Quickly"
Henrik Schilling from the Institute for Security Policy at the University of Kiel told the station NDR Schleswig-Holstein that drones of this type could pose a threat to infrastructure. According to him, the case shows that the critical infrastructure is vulnerable. "Not only in the sense of launching a physical attack, but also in the sense of spying and demonstrating that it is relatively easy to fly a drone over them". Currently, protection against this situation is only possible to a certain extent.
Schilling also noted that it would not be the first case of spying on potentially critical infrastructure. "You have to think about what might come next. Of course, drones can also carry objects, not just cameras. That can get dangerous quickly."
Russian drones over Brunsbuttel chemical park?
According to media reports, the drones spotted may be Russian Orlan-10 drones, but this is unconfirmed speculation. This drone would have a long range of about 600 kilometers and could reach speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour. This would allow them to depart from civilian ships in front of the coast. The drones spotted are believed to have indeed flown at that speed. According to Der Spiegel magazine, a special device had failed in its attempt to locate the drones.
The authorities continue the investigation. Niclas Dürbrook, the SPD's security policy spokesman, said: "These are very worrying reports. It is good that the federal and state governments are now working together to clarify the background." Therefore, the issue of drones will be debated in the Home Affairs and Justice Committee on September 4. The police are raising awareness among the population to report possible incidents./ DW
