Two children have been found among the 18 burnt bodies that were discovered by Greek firefighters in the forest of Dadia. Bodies thought to belong to illegal immigrants have been charred as a result of the great fire that engulfed Alexandropol.

Alexandroupoli coroner Pavlos Pavlidis macroscopically examined the charred human bodies at the site where they were found, near the village of Avantas, and confirmed that two of the victims are minors.

"There were a total of eighteen burnt bodies, all men, and two of them were children. They were all found in groups of two or three, at a distance of 500 meters, apparently after running to try to escape. As the policemen who accompanied me explained to me, the area is a crossing point for irregular immigrants, on the way through the Rhodope mountain range.

The coroner also explained that the bodies will be sent to the hospital tomorrow for an autopsy.

Rumors about the discovery of eight more bodies in another location affected by the fires were not confirmed by forensic medicine.

Thus, the Minister of Emigration, Dimitris Kairides, through a statement, expressed his sorrow for the loss of 18 lives.

"It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of at least 18 immigrants from the fire in the Dadia forest. Despite the constant and persistent efforts of the Greek authorities to protect the borders and human life, this tragedy confirms once again the dangers of irregular immigration. In this context, we underline and denounce once again the murderous activity of criminal traffickers, which every day endangers the lives of many immigrants both on land and at sea", he said.
