Serbia will send 500 private soldiers to Russia, who will be deployed immediately to fight alongside the Russians in Ukraine.

The news is reported by the French intelligence services, citing the Russian opposition. By September 1, several hundred recruits from the Balkans are expected to arrive at a temporary camp in the Moscow region.

In addition to the approximately 50 Serbian fighters already recruited, the contingent is expected to increase to 500 and be sent very soon along with the Russian soldiers. To accommodate them, a "Serbian unit" was created as part of the 106th Air Guard Division.

Sources say that a network of Russian and Serbian figures have been preparing the operation since May with Russian initiative and high-level support in the security apparatus.

The recruits are mainly Serbian citizens and ethnic Serbs from neighboring countries. Between mid-July and mid-August, 50 candidates were selected and brought to Russia on commercial flights in groups of two or three under the guise of a work contract with a construction company.

The person responsible for the planning and logistics of the project is a Balkan citizen residing in Russia.

Russia is struggling to raise new recruits to fight in Ukraine without declaring general mobilization. For several weeks, the Russian authorities have launched a new selection campaign, promising an immediate monetary reward of around 300 euros and the closure of legal issues for recruits.
