A firefighter has been put in handcuffs by the Greek police, with the accusation that ... he started five fires.

Greek authorities have said the seasonal firefighter works in Kefalonia and is accused of starting fires on five occasions.

According to the investigators, he started two of the fires recently in Agia Irini, while he started the other three fires last year.

The firefighter will be transferred the next day to the prosecutor's office to be questioned and face charges.

Greece is dealing with a new wave of large fires that have burned hundreds of hectares of forests, dozens of houses and cars in the last 24 hours.

The flames caused a real tragedy in a Greek forest, where the burnt bodies of 18 migrants were found.
