Fierce debate between the delegation of Kosovo and Serbia at the NATO Assembly

The delegation of the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, consisting of MPs Driton Hyseni, chairman and Xhavit Haliti, member, is participating in the work of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly being held in Sofia.

Today, since the morning, the delegation attended the work of the Defense and Security Committee at the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. In this commission, among others, three draft reports were discussed: NATO's Air and Missile Defense Development Posture by Utku CAKIROZER (Turkey), Russia's War and Allies' Support for Ukraine by Rick LARSEN (United States) , as well as The Western Balkans: Recurring Security Challenges on NATO's Doorstep by Lord Mark LANCASTER (UK.

In the presentation of this draft report, Lord Lancaster, within the framework of maintaining peace and security in the Western Balkans, put the main emphasis on the challenges and threats from tension, which have been created in Kosovo and BiH since 2023, where there was a return of significant number of violent confrontations in the north of Kosovo, which culminated in the terrorist attack in Banjska, where a member of the Kosovo Police was killed.

This was a wake-up call to Western leaders about the seriousness of the ongoing challenges in the Western Balkans. The lack of normalized relations between Belgrade and Pristina is sowing the threat of serious conflict with possible regional implications, it was further stated in his presentation.

In response, the Allies strengthened their KFOR mission.

On the other hand, it was said that the political paralysis in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) also contains a hidden potential to derail the Dayton Agreement, which has maintained a tenuous peace between the country's main constituent peoples for nearly 30 years. The High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina recently warned of "an unprecedented level of attacks" against the post-war settlement, mainly from Republika Srpska (RS), which is increasing threats to secede from BiH altogether.

After the report, there were discussions by the participating delegations, where the quality of the report was evaluated and the great importance of maintaining security and peace in the Western Balkans for NATO was emphasized, also due to the fact that NATO is present in Kosovo through KFOR. it.

Several mechanisms were also proposed that the EU could implement in order to ensure peace in this part of the region.

Also, the influence of Russia and China was considered dangerous and aimed at destabilizing the region.

The delegation of Serbia meanwhile 'complained' about, as it was said, the limited rights of Serbs in Kosovo and that Kosovo has not fulfilled its duty according to the agreement on the formation of the association of municipalities with a Serbian majority.

The members of the Serbian delegation stated that the KSF is illegal and that the only accepted force for the Serbs is KFOR and the increased international reinforcement to secure the Serbian community.

In this debate, MP Driton Hyseni thanked Mr. Lancaster for the quality report and thanked all NATO allied countries, including Mr. Lancaster and every soldier for their contribution to liberate Kosovo in 1999.

In opposition to the Serbian delegation, he emphasized that "we are facing situations when the political representatives of Serbia are making meaningless statements, without referring to reality and with a very high potential of a destructive approach to peace and stability in the Western Balkans.

"You cannot even refer to the southern province of another country, an independent country, recognized by 117 countries, including most NATO members. As well as the statement that the activities of the security forces in Kosovo are illegal, let me clarify that all the capacities of our security forces, the Kosovo Army, the police and other institutions have been designed and developed in full cooperation of the Kosovo institutions with NATO, with the allies", stressed MP Hyseni.

He also commented on the Russian influence in the region, mentioned in the report, and warned that they will send written comments on the report, if deemed necessary.

One of the proposals made during this discussion was the one made by MP Driton Hyseni and which was fully supported by Mr. Lancaster, who demanded that the EU find ways to force Belgrade to sign the agreement and thus oblige them to implement it.

The work of other commissions of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly will continue tomorrow.
