Permits for British citizens to travel to European Union countries will cost 180% more than expected, starting next year.

When the British left the EU, they also voted to restrict free travel across the European continent when they voted for Brexit. Top-Channel correspondent Arben Manaj reports from London.

After Brexit, British people will need to have an authorization to travel to European Union countries, more or less as applied in the United States or Canada, without which even if you have a visa, you cannot travel without this official authorization.

Starting next year, Britons will have to pay 6 pounds, now 17 pounds, or 180% more, to obtain this travel permit, which is valid for three years.

Starting at the end of next year, 2026, a process called ETIAS, or the European Travel Information and Authorization System, will apply to British nationals.

It is not a real visa, but rather a security check before you travel. Initially, the price of this check was set at 6 pounds, but the European Commission has recently increased it to 17 pounds, citing rising inflation and the costs of new technology.

Once confirmed, this permit will be valid for three years or until the expiry of the passport, whichever comes first. This allows British travellers to travel to EU countries as often as they wish for up to 90 days of stay in any 180-day period.

Persons who are under the age of 18 or those who are over 70 years old at the time of application are exempt from this travel fee.

Depending on your perspective, this tariff is a kind of karma for the pro-Brexit vote, which creates restrictions for the British even though relations between Britain and the European Union are getting closer after Labour came to power, but not to the point of returning freedom of travel to the way it was before the referendum on leaving the EU.
