Boeing's Starliner spacecraft has completed its journey back to Earth, but without the astronauts it was supposed to carry. Astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams will remain on the International Space Station until February 2025.

The empty spacecraft had traveled autonomously after being unloaded from the orbital laboratory.

The capsule, which suffered technical problems after liftoff with Nasa's Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams on board, was deemed too dangerous to take the astronauts home.

Instead, they will return on a SpaceX Crew Dragon, but not until February — extending an eight-day ISS stay to eight months.

The Starliner flight back took six hours. After re-entering Earth's atmosphere, parachutes were used to slow its descent at the White Sands Spaceport in New Mexico on Saturday.

Nasa said earlier that Butch and Suni were in good spirits and in regular contact with their families.

Steve Stich, NASA's commercial crew program manager, said at a news conference that both astronauts were passionate about their work.

"They now understand the importance of moving forward and ... returning the vehicle safely." This was the first test flight for Boeing's Starliner spacecraft with astronauts on board.
