The EU's special representative in the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, Miroslav Lajcak, will not take up the position of EU ambassador in Switzerland, due to "unforeseen developments", announced the bloc's delegation in Bern.

Lajcak was appointed EU ambassador to Switzerland earlier this year, while in July the bloc's member states agreed to extend his mandate as special envoy for dialogue until January 2025.

But, on Friday, the EU delegation in Switzerland announced that the current ambassador, Petros Mavromichalis, has had his mandate extended until August 31, 2025.

"Due to unforeseen developments, Miroslav Lajcak will not take the post of ambassador in Bern. The mandate of the current ambassador Petros Mavromichalis has been extended until 31.08.2025", the delegation wrote in X.

In the announcement, no explanations were given as to what "unpredictable" developments were in question.

Meanwhile, Lajçak visited Kosovo on Friday, where he met with the Deputy Prime Minister of Kosovo, Besnik Bislimi in Pristina.

Lajçak said that in the meeting with Bislim an agreement was reached for a new round of dialogue at the level of chief negotiators, but he did not indicate any date for holding this meeting./ rel
