Fears that a deadly virus that could be transmitted from rodents to humans, causing Ebola-like bloodshed, are spreading across Europe as scientists make a grim discovery.

Swedish researchers have discovered a new type of Puumala virus that can lead to a hemorrhagic fever disease that can then cause death.

Scientists are concerned about the virus' ability to spread after people became infected with the virus far from areas where it might normally occur, The Sun reports.

As "Emerging Infectious Diseases" reports: "New forms of the Puumala virus in a new geographic area may have a substantial impact on human health."

Every year, Sweden reports between 100-450 cases of Puumala requiring hospitalization, and these cases only occur in the northern part of the country.

However, two outbreaks of the fever occurred in southern Sweden in 2018 and 2020, more than 500 kilometers south of where the disease was previously identified. In both cases, the patients had not traveled and were infected.

Both patients had symptoms of hemorrhagic fever, epistaxis, poor renal function, and symptoms of renal syndrome (HFRS).
