ALARM: Cancer cases will increase by 20% in Europe by 2045

The number of new cancer cases in Europe is expected to increase by 22.5% in the next two decades. The figures were published by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

While, globally, the number of cancer cases will increase by 55% from 2022 to 2045. More specifically, from almost 19.9 million cases of cancer that were reported in 2022, in 2045 it is expected to be 30.9 million diagnosed cases.

The figures were released a few days before World Cancer Day and highlight the need to address the inequity in the distribution of resources to fight the disease.

Factors contributing to the increase in cases include an aging population, smoking, alcohol and obesity, as well as air pollution.

Currently, about one in five people develop cancer in their lifetime, while about one in nine men and one in 12 women die from it.

As the incidence of cancer increases, cancer mortality will also increase from an estimated 9.7 million people in 2022 to 16.6 million people globally in 2045.

The number of cancer deaths in Europe could increase by 32 percent, according to the analysis. In Europe, the most common case of cancer is breast cancer, followed by prostate and colon cancer.
