The US has approved the plan to attack some Iranian targets in Syria and Iraq. The attacks will take place over several different days, depending on weather conditions, an official said.

The US response comes after a drone strike killed three US soldiers in Jordan, near the Syrian border. The US accused an Iranian-backed militant group in connection with the incident.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq group is believed to be armed, financed and trained by Iran's Revolutionary Guards. They are suspected of being in hiding after Saturday's attack on Tower 22. Iran, on the other hand, has denied having any role in the incident that left 41 other American troops injured, among others.

The US Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, said during a press conference that the US will not tolerate any attack on US troops.

"We will take any action necessary to protect the United States, our interests and our people," he said.

Officials who spoke to CBS News did not give a timeline for the possible attacks. They said the US military can conduct them in bad weather, but prefers higher visibility to reduce the risk of hitting civilians.

As the US has reiterated it will respond to the drone strike, President Joe Biden and other defense officials have said Washington is not seeking a wider war with Iran or escalation of tensions in the region.

"I'm not asking for that," Biden told reporters.

Various Iranian-backed groups have stepped up attacks on the US and Israel-linked entities since the start of the war with Hamas on October 7. For example, the Houthi group in Yemen has attacked ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The US and its allies have responded to these attacks.

Meanwhile, unconfirmed sources told Reuters on Thursday that Iran is withdrawing senior officials from Syria after several Israeli attacks there in order to avoid direct involvement in a wider conflict in the region.

Meanwhile, the bodies of the three American soldiers killed in Jordan will be returned home on Friday. The White House has announced that President Joe Biden will also attend the reception ceremony at Delaware Air Force Base.
