US President Donald Trump has denied reports that his administration has discussed the possibility of providing Iran with up to $30 billion in aid to build a civilian nuclear program.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump declared: “Tell Fake Democratic Senator Chris Coons that I am not offering Iran anything, unlike Obama, who paid them billions of dollars under the ‘idiotic path to a nuclear weapon’ JCPOA (which would now have expired!), nor am I talking to them since we completely destroyed their nuclear facilities.”
Coons stated that Trump was considering a deal, like the one pushed by former President Barack Obama.
"President Trump, according to press reports, is now moving toward negotiations and offering Iran a deal that looks somewhat similar to the Iran deal offered by Obama: tens of billions of dollars in incentives and reduced sanctions in exchange for abandoning their nuclear program," Coons said.
The potential deal was first reported by CNN, citing multiple sources familiar with the matter. The outlet reported that details of the proposal were discussed last week during a secret, hours-long meeting between Steve Witkoff, the U.S. special envoy to the Middle East, and Gulf partners.
According to American media, this plan was presented one day before the US carried out its attack on the Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan nuclear plants.
A round of six talks between the US and Iran was scheduled for June 15, but Israel launched airstrikes on Iranian military, nuclear and civilian sites on June 13.
The 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran was halted by a US-brokered ceasefire, which took effect on June 24.
