A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck the Kermadec Islands region of New Zealand on Thursday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.
The earthquake was estimated at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), the USGS added. A tsunami warning was issued after the quake, the US Tsunami Warning System said.
But hours after the US Geological Survey issued a tsunami warning for the Kermadec Islands, New Zealand's National Emergency Management Agency clarified that there is no tsunami threat to New Zealand following the South Kermadec Islands earthquake.
