Three stages of the 108th edition of the "Giro d'Italia 2025" will be held in Albania, starting from Durrës, Tirana and then Vlora. However, the dates on which they will be held coincide with the end of the electoral campaign, the day of "silence" and finally, on election day.
The three dates already confirmed have raised great doubts that all that money spent by the government will be for the May 11 elections. So far, the government has allocated 7 million euros to host these 3 stages of the second most followed cycling race in Europe (after the Tour de France).
But the question everyone has raised is; is it a propaganda campaign, sports or tourism promotion? Was the expenditure of 7 million euros for these 3 days worth it?

In March 2025, the Albanian government approved a decision to organize the Giro d'Italia cycling race, 3 stages of which will be held in Albania.
The decision states that this is "an additional fund in the 2025 budget, approved for the Ministry of Education and Sports, for financing the second installment of the contract for the realization of the first three tours of the 'Giro d'Italia 2025', in the Republic of Albania.
"The Ministry of Education and Sports, in the approved budget for 2025, in the item 'current expenses', in article 605 'transfers abroad', of the budget program 'sports development', is added a fund of 400,000,000 lek, for financing the second installment of the contract for the realization of the first three tours of the 'Giro d'Italia 2025'. The fund is covered by the reserve fund of the state budget, approved for 2025, and is used to make the payment of the second installment, according to the provisions in the contract signed between the parties, for 2025," the VKM states.
In several subsequent meetings, Prime Minister Edi Rama stated that "Albania is a small Italy, while now, with this great launch, we are truly an Italy on the other side of the sea, hosting an event that is not only sporting, but a great popular event where everyone is involved and where for us it is the first time at all, I hope not the last."

But, did the full 7 million euros allocated by the government come out?! According to documents analyzed by VoxNews, no! A few days ago, the Municipality of Rrogozhina opened a tender with the object "Promotion within the framework of the Giro d'Italia". The tender will be held on April 22, while several goods have been requested.
120 caps with logos, 120 t-shirts with logos, 120 small hand flags, 4 promotional banners with logos or even 10 colored plastic paints have been requested. From what can be read in the documents, the Municipality of Rrogozhina, but not the only one, has been instructed to carry out activities for this sporting event.
It is learned that one of the three stages that will be held will also partially pass through the territory of Rrogozhina, while the municipality of this city has been ordered to hold promotion tenders. The tender was signed by Mayor Edison Memolla, who has "forgotten" the problems with SPAK and is now dealing with promotions during the electoral campaign.

The official website of the "Giro d'Italia" has confirmed that the first 3 stages will be held in Albania. The 108th edition will open in our country, where cyclists from all over the world will compete to win one of the 3 main cycling events worldwide.
On May 9th, the first stage will start in Durrës, then in Rrogozhina, returning to Elbasan, the old road will be crossed. But, the cyclists will pass twice in Surrel, near the Prime Minister's house, and then the stage will be finalized in Tirana. This entire route is 160 kilometers long.
Meanwhile, the second stage, on May 10, will be a 13-kilometer time trial and will be held entirely in Tirana.
The third stage is on May 11, the day of the elections. It starts in Vlora, crosses the Vlora River road, Gjormë, near Kuçi, goes to Qeparo, Himarë and climbs the old road to Llogara. Then it heads to the city of Vlora where the stage and the entire race in Albania closes, before moving on to Italy.
