The Greek newspaper 'Kathimerini' writes that it remains unclear whether Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama will be allowed to enter Athens.

On Sunday, May 12, he is scheduled to address a gathering of Albanian immigrants. Initially, the rally was planned to be held in the closed stadium of Galatsi, but recently the Municipality removed the permission it had originally given, due to other activities that are planned. Therefore, it remains to be seen if and where the event of Albanian immigrants will be moved for Mr. Rama, writes Kathimerini .

The Greek side still does not have a protocol. According to Kathimerini, the Foreign Ministry was informed about Rama's visit, but refused preparations for a reception of the Albanian Prime Minister.

"Mr. Rama unofficially announced his intention to visit Athens through his confidant Endri Fuga, who was in Greece a few days ago. The Foreign Ministry informed Mr. Rama's confidants that, starting from the pre-election phase that Greece is going through due to the European elections, it would be preferable to postpone it until after June 9. Since then, Athens' invitation has been ignored and the Albanian prime minister is said to be determined to carry out the visit", continues Kathimerini.

In the background of the visit is what happened in the campaign of May 14 in Albania, when the candidate supported by Greece in Himara, Fredi Beleri, was imprisoned two days before the vote for buying votes.

The Greek media says that with his words, Rama can further promote the internal political conflict and influence the vote of Albanian immigrants.

"Given the eventful atmosphere of Himara, Rama's trip could fuel internal political conflict, elevating the Beleri issue to the agenda of public debate. Or even provoke reactions from the continental northern element in Athens, which the government definitely does not want.

Diplomatic sources in Tirana and Athens pointed out that the planned visit could objectively have the element of a show of force, where Rama tries to instrumentalize the vote in the European elections of tens of thousands of Albanian immigrants who have the legal right to vote as Greek citizens, in response to Beler's candidacy.

However, such an event, even if Rama avoids references to the European elections, would in any case constitute indirect involvement in the process", writes Kathimerini.

It remains to be seen if there will be an official reception agenda for the Albanian prime minister or if he will be rejected because of Fredi Beleri.

Mitsotakis has made a risky bet by including Beleri in the lists of candidates for the European Parliament elections. Rama is seeking to repay his debt by testing him with a game of nerves that starts with his visit to Athens.

In Kathimerini's analysis, it is written that, since there will be no official meetings, the interest from Edi Rama's visit to Athens is focused on his speech about Albanians and on the inevitable references to Greek-Albanian relations and the Greek minority, with a focus developments in Himara. The (arrogant) feeling of being "triumphant" in the "Battle of Himara" will accompany Edi Rama to Athens as well.
