In Albania, there are 39 non-bank microfinance institutions licensed by the Bank of Albania to operate.

These offices have in many cases turned into licensed "moneylenders", where thousands of Albanians have fallen prey to receiving financial products and then faced unjustifiable interest rates far beyond their ability to pay.

The VOICE started the interest in the Bank of Albania a few months ago, to understand what happens with these companies and how they manage to work even though the complaints and denunciations of the citizens have flooded the social networks.

First, we encountered an ordeal of returning answers from BSH, who only 1 and a half months after our initial request, returned an email showing why these microcredit offices operate even though they apply such rates that exceed 100% per year.

The Bank of Albania quotes the regulation but at no point does it show what the reality is in the country.

Ping-pong continues even with the license. From 2020 to 2023, the Bank of Albania declares that it has licensed only 1 new entity, out of 7 that have applied.

This subject is the microfinance institution "Lendal", about which we will inform you below.

At the same time, we asked for information from our legislators, who are responsible for the laws that improve or endanger the lives of citizens.

None of the deputies of the Commission for Production Activities, refused to appear in front of the cameras. Off camera, they state that it is the fault of citizens who are uninformed and take such high-risk loans.

So do self-proclaimed economics experts. Some of them quickly left the phones of our journalists, as soon as they found out that the topic chosen for the interview was microcredits and their abuses. How far have their threads reached?

Is it just a matter of information?

Are citizens being bombarded by microcredit advertisements and the facilities to get these loans in a few minutes and without having to be insured?

One of the microfinance institutions, Kredo.al, contacted by email by ZÜRI, whether they apply such interest rates, they refuse to answer, contenting themselves with the sentence "the client is informed about the obligations and rights when taking a loan from us". .

To our question as to why they undertake to lend to "victims" who do not have the opportunity to repay this loan, Kredo.al says that "Our institution finances from the age of 20 to 70, the age that is allowed to work." The evaluation for granting the loan is carried out based on several parameters and the customer's data, as well as his credit history in the banking and financial system in the country."

In the United Kingdom, creditors are not allowed to charge higher bankruptcy fees than the total amount owed. In Albania, no one agrees to talk about this topic.

7 economic experts who travel from one television studio to another, hesitated to give an answer to ZŽRI when the topic chosen for the interview was microcredits and the financial risk that threatens citizens. When will it stop? / THE VOICE
