20,000 Albanians suffer from prolonged Covid

Neither the Ministry of Health nor the Institute of Public Health has given a public figure on how many Albanian citizens suffer today the consequences of what is known as the extended Covid.

It is about the category of persons suffering from direct and indirect consequences after the passage of the disease, consequences such as lung damage, chronic fatigue, nervous system damage and psychiatric disorders. Such consequences last 4-5 months, but even more so after the infection passes and are being referred to by international experts as "post-COVID" syndrome, or prolonged COVID syndrome.

But operational data from the Institute of Public Health suggest an alarming figure of about 20,000 people, who are suffering from the extended Covid.

So far data from the Ministry shows that the COVID 19 pandemic is expected to increase the burden of chronically ill people. Fibrosis in post-COVID lungs, in addition to being a new burden on the system, significantly decrease the productivity of life in affected persons. Generally these people do not face heavy physical work and need life-long medications, turning into burdens on society and the health system in the long term.

According to a Together for Life monitoring report, for the period January-August 2021 in psychiatric hospitals the number of patients hospitalized has increased 10.5 percent compared to last year and covid's pandemic and quarantine established in the first months of 2020 have contributed to their growth.

Treating mental health disorders is a global public health challenge, which is growing in size. These disorders from statistical data result in more parts of society with low socio-economic status. Low-income families have the highest burden of mental health disease.

Mental health disorders are associated with delays in seeking medical assistance, delays in understanding the problem and reduced access to health services. Also, diagnosis is more difficult for individuals who have other chronic, or acute, diseases and exhibit mental health problems.
