Why the French President is the most powerful in Europe

The French will vote sunday for their new President and in the race for a second term is the current President, Emmanuel Macron. Among the recent messages he is conveying in this campaign is the idea that France needs a strong President in these times of crises, as a normal person would destabilize him.

The term Macron used to describe his idea was "Jupiterian", referring to the "king of all gods", according to Roman mythology. It may seem hypocrisy said in a country that centuries ago threw away the monarchy.

But in the last 50 years, the French Constitution has evolved and evolution has always been in the direction of consolidation and increased power of the President.

"We have a President who is in charge of the republic, who controls the government, controls parliament, controls the Constitutional Court. All of which makes a super-president, just like Jupiter, as we call him Macron," Christophe Chabrot, lecturer of public law at Lumere University in Lyon, tells Euronews.

"It can be compared to the powers of kings in the early 19th century, when many monarchs began to lose power in the face of prime ministers, but again had enough power to dictate policies in their countries," he illustrates.

Critics say the French parliament is turning into a notary, endorsing any decision of the President, and some politicians are demanding changes to the Constitution to balance powers.

"France's president, according to the law, has more power than any other leader in Europe," says Delphine Dulong, professor of political science at the University of Paris.
