Yesterday afternoon, the "nightmare" for the southeast of the country came to an end. After 11 days, traffic was officially reopened in the affected segment in the Dragostunja area, part of the Librazhd-Përrenjas national axis.
The segment had become impassable due to massive landslides in the area known as “Arrat e Gurrës”, where erosion cracked the asphalt and severely damaged the infrastructure. During this period, traffic towards Korça was diverted via the Maliq-Moglicë-Gramsh axis, a segment with depreciated infrastructure that extended the journey by about an hour.
As a result, transport operators increased the ticket price from 7 thousand lek to 10 thousand lek, arguing the additional costs of fuel and time. The increase of 3 thousand lek was met with discontent by citizens, but was silently “accepted” due to the lack of alternatives.
Now that the road has reopened and travel routes have returned to normal, citizens expect an immediate reflection in ticket prices. However, so far the fares have remained the same.
Meanwhile, the situation has also affected the market for basic products in the southeast. In Korça, the price of a loaf of bread has increased significantly, from 120 lek to 140-150 lek, depending on the bakery. Bakers argue that, although the price of flour has not changed, transportation and electricity costs have increased during the lockdown period.
Citizens are concerned about the impact on family budgets and are demanding market monitoring and concrete measures from the authorities to curb abuses. Now that the road is passable, it remains to be seen whether the coming days will bring price reductions, or whether the temporary increase will become a new standard for consumers in the southeast.
