From oil and energy, to trade and capital markets, along with cryptocurrencies, the conflict in the Middle East is having direct and indirect effects on global markets.
With Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz after attacks by Israel and the United States, the price of crude oil in the markets is rising. From around $65 on February 25, a barrel of oil is now costing more than $67.
"We saw an increase of 2 dollars in a few hours. This is also due to speculation. I think this fluctuation will not last long," emphasized Maksim Caslli, an expert in investment markets.
With near-panic fears of a "global crisis" on the horizon, from Asia, to the United States, including Europe, financial markets in particular and the world in general remain anxious. The Standard and Poor's 500, the Dow Jones and even the Nasdaq have suffered shocks from fears of an escalation of the conflict.
"Markets become disorganized when something is unclear. When the cause is clear, the market knows how to behave. In this case, there is a lot of uncertainty. And it takes time to find clear causes. Meanwhile, speculators in the markets move. This causes a chain reaction in stock markets around the world, instilling fear," emphasized Maksim Caslli, an expert on investment markets.
Although over 1,700 kilometers away, the conflict in the Middle East is expected to have economic effects in Albania as well. This is mainly due to Israel, a country from which Albania imported goods worth 27.7 million euros last year, a figure halved compared to 2024.
On the other hand, Albania has few third-party relations with Iran, a country from which import figures have not exceeded 4 million euros in the last 3 years.
"A little directly and mainly indirectly. The effects are being felt in European markets from where Albania imports the most. This consequently makes us more exposed," Caslli stressed.
Based on the "cycle of crises" and their "chain reaction", a possible global economic collapse would also have its effects in Albania, as happened with the one in 2008. Only this time, due to closer ties with the world, the effects would take less time to spread.
