Albania continues to be the only country in Europe that produces artisanal bread, and for almost 5 years, bakeries have been facing a shortage of baking specialists, even though their salaries have increased to between 800-1500 euros.
For this reason, the Bread Producers Association has sought government assistance, asking that bakeries be subsidized by the state.
"We demand the treatment of "Baker" as a disappearing profession. This is not simply the protection of a category of workers but carries in itself a national asset. We demand concrete measures to attract contingents of young people interested in this profession, by providing scholarships, accommodation opportunities and other facilities.
"We are requesting that the specialty category "Baker" be subsidized, with specific payments to alleviate the high salaries required in conditions of labor shortage ," said the president of the bread producers' association, Gëzim Peshkëpia.
According to them, the labor shortage has been influenced by the decline in students in vocational schools, especially for the food technology branch, as young people do not want the profession of baker.
"This shortage is a serious blow to our artisanal bread production, which is based on the manual labor of specialists," he said.
This alarming situation has prompted many bakery managers to hire labor from third countries, but this solution has not proven successful as the income is far from the Albanian bread tradition./ TCH
