The balance of a rather fragile year

By Aladin Stafa

As this calendar year comes to an end, the closing of a chapter and the opening of a new one remains the most natural thing that can happen to a person. Each of us started this year with a project-plan with points with the idea of carrying them out. Sometimes forgetting other influencing factors, external or internal, and to say that not everything remains in our hands.

But in fact, right from the start, we must say that this year was filled with many iconic events. Some ending old journeys, some starting new chapters, and others not to be forgotten, leaving quite a mark on our memory.

Human society in the world faced economic difficulties, political turmoil, wars and conflicts filled with victims on both sides. But on the other hand, technological development progressed faster than that; the integration of human activity with Artificial Intelligence and the extraordinary influence of social media burdened man's relationship with whatever new thing is coming.

If man has one ability to be admired, it is certainly that of adapting and adapting to any unexpected environment he faces, turning any situation into normality. Just as the war in Ukraine or the conflict in the Middle East now seem to us. Until recently a hot topic, now the eyes of the world are no longer directed at Eastern Europe, abandoning its fate to the existential unknown.

It seems that the conflict in the Middle East is the one that has grabbed all the spotlight. The renewed confrontation between Israel and Palestine became the key word of this year. The military operations in Gaza, Hamas and Bibi managed to capture the macro level of the world panorama. The demo movements in Western Europe and even the USA, brought at the same time awareness of human rights and disagreement with the created situation.

The European Parliament elections also marked a slight change of direction, paving the way for the future of the right, which has been absent from the helm for years. The leftist spirit that has gripped Europe in the last decade has brought dissatisfaction to societies. The “free world”, the “Walk” movement, the mixing of many cultures, the weakening of the family and the deteriorating economy have brought about the need for a conservative right-wing spirit as if to curb it at least a little.

Trump's re-election in November was the clearest message yet that global politics will undergo a radical change. His promises were met with worldwide popularity, showing once again that no one likes chaos, debauchery or a shift from the traditional axis. And the most recent was the fall of the Assad regime. Syrian President Bashar Al Assad, after 24 years of absolute rule, was forced to flee to Moscow after rebel forces took control of major cities, ending an agony and opening the 'auction' for the country's new political leadership. European bureaucrats were euphoric, expecting to breathe more freely from the influx of refugees that had become a constant problem since the Arab Spring.

On the other hand, natural disasters were inevitable. As a response of nature to the power of man whose exploitation is exceeding all limits, almost every continent faced the consequences that it left behind. Devastating floods, typhoons and earthquakes displaced millions of people, emphasizing the urgent need for climate adaptation. At the same time, giving us a message that we have lost the fight against it every time, so the care we need to have for it must be maximized by avoiding our insatiable nature.

The two sports-cultural events that took place during this year are also the European Football Championship in Germany and the Olympic Games that took place in France. For us Albanians, a golden opportunity to show Europe another face of ourselves. In an effort to remove the stigma created by a minority, it was a tourist advertisement for Albania before the summer season. A pride that goes beyond the stands in the stadiums with the contribution of each of us.

Every day of the year. On the other hand, the scandal of the opening of the Olympic Games eclipsed the entire event, emphasizing more the message it conveyed. Even more than the sporting content of the competition itself.

We can definitely conclude that it was a year full of ups and downs and each of us grew, failed, won but most importantly learned. What the New Year will bring, depends simply on our motivation to make changes or what new arrivals we will have in our lives.

Tomorrow brings new opportunities. And as if by chance, the year ends with the birth of a figure as sacrificial as it is hopeful, to say that life goes on and the sun will rise again. And as Benjamin Franklin said - be at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and may each new year find you a better man.
