Why is America a very wealthy nation, but full of poor people?
Can you take refuge in America?

By Federico Rampini – Corriere della Sera

American poverty is greatly affected by the fact that the country continues to welcome large influxes of foreigners, most of whom are poor.

The US is not a system that produces poor people, but rather attracts them. And in the metropolises, the welfare system spends heavily on the homeless and illegal immigrants.

An incredibly wealthy nation, the most prosperous on the planet, but full of poor people: this is a pretty true image of America.

At least at first glance. Homeless people on the sidewalks are a particularly dramatic sight at this time of year: when in New York the temperature drops below zero at night, in Chicago it is even lower.

Meanwhile, the pressure from a population of illegal immigrants pushes the Democratic mayor of the "Big Apple" to ask Donald Trump for help.

And the crisis of deaths due to Fentanyl overdoses (which fortunately has begun to show signs of regression) in recent years had exacerbated the phenomenon that economist Angus Deaton defined as "deaths of despair."

This is how a reader reacted to my recent description of the "rich youth" in this country. It was a video in which I showed this paradox: the insanely high cost of living in New York does not prevent restaurants and nightclubs from filling up with a very young audience; even phenomena such as Bitcoin's historic record ($100,000) have among their causes an influx of investments from young savers.

The reader wrote to me as follows: “I watched your video on the wealth of young Americans. I have a son who lives in Chicago, who is rich among other things, and I visit that city quite often, so I seek to change at least partially the vision you present, which makes America look like a nation of young rich economists. The poverty rate here in Chicago is 16.4% and rises to 20.6% among ethnic minorities and 23% among young people. Even in a wealthy city like Boston, there are more than 1,500 homeless people and they are growing, creating urban encampments. Homelessness in the United States of America has increased by 6% since 2017 and today the number is 582,462. Behind homelessness, there is a mix of unresolved challenges that worsen with economic weakness but have never been corrected even in moments of recovery and that call into question the solidity and effectiveness of the entire welfare system. The conditions of poverty that affect 12% of the population are intertwined: almost 40 million people and a percentage that has changed little in decades. You often try to present America as an island of happiness, but I am not entirely sure in light of this data that this is really so.

Since most newly arrived immigrants are poor, this distorts the whole narrative, that America is a system that produces poor people. No, it doesn't produce them, it attracts them: which is very different. It attracts them from the rest of the world because they know they have a good chance of doing better here, because this is a country marked by the socio-economic upliftment of all its ethnic minorities; moreover, they will be better off here, even though they unfortunately remain poor.

One European myth to dispel is that of America as the ‘Wild West of wild, welfare-free capitalism.’ In New York, illegal immigrants were given shelter in city-mandated hotels and debit cards worth $350 a week, a kind of civic income. In California, local welfare spending on the homeless per capita exceeds that of Scandinavian countries.

America is not a happy island, it has big problems. Some of these problems have worsened even more in this quarter century, especially in the political-cultural sphere. But it makes no sense to describe it as hell. If things are so bad here, why do so many young talents keep leaving Italy (and also France and Germany) to move here?
