Just three days after the summit in Alaska, Vladimir Putin found himself on the defensive again.

While Zelensky and European allies have managed to restore pressure on Moscow, Putin should agree to meet with the Ukrainian president and discuss the possibilities of making territorial compromises in Donbass.

The main problem is that Putin, unlike Trump, is not known for flexibility and often insists on his historical positions. At the Alaska summit, he had brought documents that claimed to prove that Russia had a historical right to Ukraine. But US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told him that the US is not interested in historical claims, forcing Putin to agree to talk to Zelensky, whom he considers an “illegitimate leader.”

According to France Presse sources, Putin has only expressed interest in a meeting with Zelensky in Moscow, a proposal that was immediately rejected by Ukraine.

Kremlin diplomatic consultant Yuri Ushakov said that negotiations could return "between delegations," as in Istanbul, but now Putin cannot withdraw without risking his reputation.

Trump's diplomacy favors quick action: he pits leaders against each other and improvises.

Putin must find a concrete proposal or impose unacceptable conditions, reopening negotiations as Russian troops advance into Ukraine.

According to Russian government analyses, the number of conscripted soldiers has fallen sharply, from 92,000 a year earlier, to just 37,000 in April-June 2025. European sanctions and Trump's threats have also reduced Russian oil exports to India. This is pushing Moscow towards a "rescue" strategy...

Even the unexpected statement by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who removed the territorial issues of Donbass and Crimea from the discussion, saying that the war was for Russia's security and the protection of Russians, indicates an opportunity for compromise or an attempt to restore negotiations on strategic topics, including the possible presence of European troops and security guarantees for Ukraine according to the NATO model.

This change indicates that the situation of war and diplomacy is complete and requires urgent solutions from Moscow, while American and European pressure is increasing.
