Fire in Porto-Palermo

Military and firefighting forces were confronted at the weekend with a massive fire that engulfed the forest area of Porto-Palermo.

40 members of the Armed Forces, assisted by the "Cougar" helicopter, were engaged since Friday night in extinguishing the flames that threatened to spread to residential areas due to strong winds.

The Minister of Defense, Niko Peleshi, said that the firefighting operations were made difficult by the terrain conditions.

Meanwhile, the Minister of the Interior, Taulant Balla, announced the evacuation of residents from homes and businesses in the area.

"At this moment the situation is on the way to normalization and work is continuing to eliminate all the fires, which present a risk of rekindling the fires," Minister Balla wrote on Facebook.

For his part, the Minister of Defense warned: "Before the law, anyone who starts fires, anyone who does not notify and unintentionally or intentionally becomes an accomplice."
