Albanian murderer 'begs' from British prison: Send me back to Albania,
Eugert Merizaj

An Albanian prisoner, convicted of murder in the United Kingdom, has published numerous videos on the social network TikTok from his cell at HMP Manchester prison, requesting to be transferred to Albania to serve the remainder of his sentence.

Eugert Merizaj, 32, was sentenced in May 2022 to 32 years in prison for the shooting death of rival drug trafficker Hemawand Ali Hussein.

Despite the ban on the use of mobile devices in British prisons, Merizaj has managed to regularly publish videos on social media, and even broadcast live while playing online games for financial rewards.

In the latest video shared this month, Merizaj complains about prison conditions and expresses his desire to move to Albania, to be closer to his family and to avoid, according to him, the "terrible food " of British prisons.

"I've made all the applications. It seems to me that those serving life sentences are not moving at all," Merizaj says in the clip.

The prisoner transfer agreement between the United Kingdom and Albania has entered into force in May 2023. It aims to save public money by allowing the transfer of all Albanian citizens sentenced to over four years in prison to continue serving their sentences in their homeland.

However, the process has been marked by significant delays. According to sources from the Albanian Prison Service, only ten transfers of Albanian prisoners from British prisons have been carried out so far.
