The US Department of State has responded to a Top Channel journalist's inquiry about what was discussed during the meeting between Brendan Hanrahan, senior official in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs at the State Department, and the head of SPAK two days ago.
"The United States is working with Albania towards our shared goals of interdicting drug trafficking, organized crime, and irregular migration. Senior Department officials met with the Head of the Special Prosecution Office (SPAK), Dumani, to discuss areas of mutually beneficial cooperation," a State Department official said in response to Top Channel.
Dumani's visit to Washington came at a crucial moment for SPAK and the new justice institutions in Albania. The High Prosecutorial Council is expected to open the competition for the new head of the Special Prosecution Office in a few weeks, while the head of the National Bureau of Investigation is also expected to be elected very soon.
Last year, Dumani was honored with the "Champion in the Fight Against Corruption" award, given by former Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
