The Qukës-Qafë Plloçë road was officially opened this Friday for traffic with all the relevant signage.

Prime Minister Edi Rama, Minister of Infrastructure and Energy Belinda Balluku and the leader of the Socialist Party for Korça, Niko Peleshi, were present at the inauguration of this road axis.

The project has two carriageways and auxiliary lanes, while in some cases, when there are grade differences, there is also a third lane.

The road also includes two tunnels, one 710 meters and the other 300 meters long, and four bridges, two of which are metal suspension bridges.

The project had initially started during the previous government's time, in 2010-2011, but according to Deputy Prime Minister Balluku, it had to be redone from scratch.

"If you talk to the engineers, they say it was a cold project and indifferent to the geology of the area, the atmospheric conditions that this area has and, moreover, to all the connections with the villages in the area. Then the project started in 2015, we had to completely review it. It is 100% changed ," said Deputy Prime Minister Balluku.

"It is the longest and most arduous project because it was started backwards ," said Prime Minister Rama, adding that the residents of the area finally have a "great liberation."

"When we inherited it, it had started without a project. It is the longest and most difficult project, because it started backwards. Now it is a big deal that it is finished and that also the people of the area, for whom it is a great victory, a great liberation, but everyone has it at their disposal. It seemed like it would never end. I remember the bridge they had built, with a 17-meter difference in level," said Rama.

Residents welcomed the head of government with drums and salt cake, a traditional dish.

Now, the Tirana-Korça distance will be covered in about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

This project improves the parameters of the route and enables access for traffic passing between Corridor 8 from the Tirana-Elbasan road axis to the southeast, as well as shortening the distances to the Kapshtica border crossing point, the city of Korça and beyond.
