New details are learned from the incident reported earlier today, where a 19-year-old Albanian was rescued from the state of Sierra Leone and repatriated.

State Police say the complaint was filed by his mother, who said the boy had been taken hostage and was being held in the southwest African country.

Although it remains unclear whether he had gone there for tourist purposes or something else, according to police, the 19-year-old had managed to escape from his captors and had gone to a police station there.

Representatives of RENEA and Interpol Tirana immediately headed for the capital, Freetown, where, together with the authorities there, they made it possible for him to leave for Albania.

State Police Announcement:

The aid and repatriation operation from Sierra Leone to Albania of a 19-year-old man has been successfully finalized.

The State Police, after receiving electronically from the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs the request of a citizen seeking assistance from the state for the return of her son to Albania, who claimed that her 19-year-old son had been kidnapped in the city of Freetown, Sierra Leone, and had then managed to escape by going to the police station of this city.

Based on the information received from the communication between the MEPJ and the State Police, it turned out that the 19-year-old was in a serious emotional state and in order to enable his return to Albania, the intervention of specialized State Police officers was necessary to escort him from the city of Freetown to Tirana.

Immediately, the State Police organized the work of sending Police officers (from Interpol Tirana and the RENEA Special Department) to Sierra Leone, in order to accompany the 19-year-old, cooperating closely with the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs for the procedures for obtaining an entry visa and with the State Police liaison officer attached to the Albanian Embassy in London/United Kingdom.

Interpol Tirana also coordinated with Interpol Freetown for the 19-year-old's speedy return to Albania.

State Police officers traveled to Sierra Leone, where they met with representatives of Interpol Freetown, and after the necessary coordination, the 19-year-old's trip to Albania was made possible, which was carried out without any problems.

The 19-year-old's mother thanked the State Police and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for returning her son to Albania.

The State Police thanks its counterparts for their cooperation, assistance and support during this assistance and repatriation operation.
