In the classification made by the two most important university quality rankings for Southern Europe, Albania ranks at the bottom of the list. While the data of 2023, show that four Albanian Universities have dropped 200 places from last year's ranking.
The first ranking of universities, Times Higher Education World University Rankings included only one university from the Albanian world, the University of Pristina in the 1501 position.
Meanwhile, the best universities in the Region are 3 Serbian universities (ranked in the countries of 801+, 1001+ 1501+, 2 Universities of Bosnia, 1 Macedonia, no university from Albania.
The second, QS World University Ranking, which for a few years has included four Albanian public universities (UT, UAMD, UPT, UBT) and 2 private ones (Epoka & Bedwr) in the ranking.
Albanian universities out of 688 universities in total are listed:
- Agricultural University of 605
- University of Durrës i 606
- Polytechnic University of 658
-University of Tirana i 677
The University of Tirana, the largest factory of University Diplomas in Albania, is only 10 places away from the bottom of the table, i.e. 677 out of 688 universities in Southern Europe.
This shows a drastic drop in the quality of universities in Albania, since in 2021 these universities were ranked in the 301-350 band and in 2022 between 350-400.
They have not suffered a drop in the ranking just from the addition of new universities in the ranking that, although newly entered, are ranked above.
The drop this year is by 200 places, while only 146 universities have been added to the ranking list.
This situation was denounced by the Civic Center, which estimates that this positioning of Albanian universities is related to their approach to education, which according to them invest more in the offices of the incumbents than in scientific equipment, recruit staff on the basis of friendship and not meritocracy, pay more watchdogs than scientific projects, and in the last two years have had substantial problems with the academic, political and legal reputation of their holders.
According to Qëndresa Cittarë, Albanian universities must undergo academic, administrative and financial vetting, to clean them from corruption, nepotistic recruitments and unfair scientific advancements, otherwise in the coming years we will not find them at all in these international rankings.
