Three Albanians have been arrested at the port of Livorno in Italy, where they had gone to withdraw 148kg of cocaine from Ecuador, Italian media reported.
The cocaine packaged in 139 packets had come from ecuador's port of Guayaquil hidden in a container of bananas and switzerland as a destination.
The Italian authorities acted on the basis of alerts that had been exchanged with the Customs Agency.
Scans revealed 139 packages hidden in the banana container, and officers from the Guardia di Finance were positioned for several hours waiting to arrest those who were coming to pick up the shipment.
At the time of arresting albanian 'couriers' did not resist, but it is learnt that their identification was difficult as they did not reside in Italy and did not have identification documents.
The names of the Albanian 'couriers' are not disclosed, but two of those arrested are taught that they are brothers, corriere della Sera writes, adding that if the drugs had gone to the right destination they would have benefited from a sum of thousands of euros.
According to authorities, this is the largest seizure of cocaine in recent years at this port, while the Livorno Court has appointed the prison sentence for 3 Albanian couriers.
