Belgian citizen Dries Lonneux has been sentenced to 12 years in prison by a court in Belgium, accused of being a member of a criminal organization that trafficked large quantities of cocaine from Colombia, transiting through the ports of Antwerp or Rotterdam.
The cargo seized in a record amount of 1.9 tons of cocaine had a value of about 80 million euros, while the organization that already has 18 defendants could have trafficked up to 15 tons of cocaine.
The 44-year-old Belgian, from whom SPAK seized 5 apartments in Saranda and 5 plots of land in Tirana a few months ago, said that he had a very small role in the organization, asking for a small punishment.
He stated in court that the head of the organization is an Albanian citizen, but he cannot say his name because his family living in Albania is at risk.
"It is a big organization. I cannot speak for its leader who is Albanian, while my family lives in Albania. I participated in the activities of this organization, but I did not give orders or directives. I took orders and was present in a supervisory role. My mission was to observe and report. But I didn't touch the cocaine," he told the court.
In 2019, Dries Lonneux is found to have invested in Albania in the opening of a business company named "RALET GREEN", whose activity is the development of new technologies. Also, Lonneux owns five apartments in Saranda, which were seized by the Special Prosecutor's Office, as well as 5 plots of land in Tirana.
