The killing at sea on Tuesday of a 7-year-old child at Himara Beach by a boat, which was driven by a police commissioner, has brought back the debate about beach safety in Albania.
The number of people who lose their lives at sea continues to remain high and with an increase in 2021, while the vast majority of beach stations are not covered by safety and lifeguards, as required by law.
According to the data of the non-governmental organization "Albanian Federation of Beach Watch and Water Rescue", 105 people have lost their lives in the last 5 years, from 2017 to 2021, as a result of drowning on the Albanian coast.
The highest number of victims was recorded in 2017 with 47 people drowned at sea, while 19 cases were recorded in 2021 with an increase compared to 2020 when 12 drowned at sea were recorded.
According to the data of the Federation, made known to the Voice of America, out of 19 people who lost their lives last year, 5 were drowning and 14 as a result of cardiac problems.
According to the Federation, during the summer of 2019, 12 drownings at sea were reported, of which 5 were caused by a heart attack, 1 due to health reasons, 1 as a result of being hit by a boat, 1 as a result of motives related to criminal circumstances. and 4 of them came as a result of drowning at sea.
During this year's tourist season, according to the Federation, about 1,200 licensed beach watchers have been included in the beach stations, which are in a much higher number in the coastal area and where this year there have been no losses of life at sea.
The Federation of Beach Watchers says that there are about 3,000 beach stations, a large part of which are not covered by watchers.
The Albanian government created the National Coastal Agency eight years ago as a special structure for the control and inspection of entities that exercise activity as a beach station, and several improvements have been made in the legal framework, but the situation in the coastal area still faces many challenges.
In social networks and in the media, flagrant violations of private navigational vehicles such as jet skis, speedboats and dinghies entering the areas where vacationers are located have been reported, while in many areas there are no lookout towers and lack of observers.
This year alone, there have been three incidents where, in July, a couple of young people were hit on the coast of Jala in Vlora by a dinghy that went out of control at sea and ended up on the shore. One of the young men is still hospitalized with serious injuries.
A few days later, another child was injured by a dinghy on the coast of Vlora and received medical treatment.
The most serious case was recorded on Tuesday when 7-year-old Jonada Avdia, who was vacationing with her parents who came from England, was hit to death by the boat that had entered the Potami beach area in Himare, outside the rules and was driven by a Commissioner police. (VOA)
