Rexhep Meta, the father of President Ilir Meta, closed his eyes forever this Monday as his son learned the news in his cell during a meeting with lawyer Kujtim Cakrani. The latter says he was talking to Meta about his case when the sad news was announced to the president.
The lawyer says that Ilir Meta immediately broke down and his eyes filled with tears, but he still held his own, showing, according to Kujtim Cakran, extraordinary dignity and strength in the conditions he was in.
"The president's eyes filled with tears but he held himself back. I would not have wanted to be present at that moment, but life and fate brought me to be present. It left me with a very bitter taste that I will never forget this moment," says the lawyer.
Kujtim Cakrani says he was talking to Ilir Meta and at the moment they were discussing his case, the president was informed that his father, Rexhep Meta, had passed away.
"The president certainly held his own, but it was still very sad news; learning about the death of his father in detention. This happens to many Albanians, but I was present today when the president received the news and he honestly showed a dignity and self-restraint that I admire. Today has been the worst day for me," the lawyer says.
Rexhep Meta will be laid to rest in his birthplace, in the village of Çepan in Skrapar, and President Ilir Meta is also expected to travel south.
The Special Prosecution Office is reported to have immediately approved the request for Ilir Meta, now detained and under indictment as a suspect for several criminal offenses, to travel to Çepan and bid his father farewell.
The escort will be carried out by employees of the State Police and the Operational Forces of the General Directorate of Prisons, but first, the director Adriatik Kupi must sign the permission and measures for the escort of Ilir Meta to Skrapar.
