Italian authorities dismantled a drug trafficking network and arrested four people, among them two Albanians.

According to the Italian media, it is suspected that 19 people were involved in this criminal network.

Investigations began in late 2020 after a prisoner who returned from leave felt unwell in his cell and was taken to Portoferraio Hospital.

After examinations, it was discovered that in the colon of the prisoner there was a dose of cocaine, which was bought during the leave.

Investigations revealed that the drug had been brought to the island of Elba from the province of Lucca by an Albanian.

The investigations, which continued with wiretapping and environmental wiretapping, made it possible to gather a lot of information about a thriving drug distribution activity across the island involving 19 people, 15 men and 4 women.

The drugs came from Lucca, where an Albanian citizen operated, who is suspected to be the leader of the gang. He was put in handcuffs.

From the calculations, it appears that the profits of this group were up to 8 thousand euros per week.

Investigators also noted the frequent use of coded language by suspects and buyers to refer to narcotics and/or money, with the use of specific and repeated terms such as: "baskets, tools, cans of paint, keys, beer, cheese , gasoline and mattresses".

The main actors of this drug traffic, in order to appear clean in every police check, have taken care to hide the narcotics in some valleys in some wooded areas on the outskirts of Portoferraio, which were nevertheless discovered by the carabinieri.

The judge has ordered the security measure of arrest and imprisonment for the 38-year-old Albanian and the other 47-year-old, also an Albanian citizen, and for the two Italians, a 65-year-old and a 58-year-old, an obligation to appear.
