They don't go on an excursion or any nature activity with the class on a horse or donkey. These children, the need has conditioned them to go to school like their peers, to learn to drive working animals.
It is the only way for them to manage to go to the school of Lekas in the Municipality of Korça. It once had over 250 students. Today, its door is kept open by only 6 children who also come from the surrounding villages. Despite the forgetfulness and difficulties, the families and these students themselves do not miss a day of school, sacrificing even in the cold winter of the southeast.
"I'm in the fourth grade and I come to school every day with a donkey. In winter it's a little more difficult, but I'm used to it," says a student.
"I am in the seventh grade. I have been riding horses for 7 years. At the beginning, in the first and second grade, even dad came, but now I'm used to it," another student tells A2 television.
Altin Kamberi is forced to leave work to accompany his child in first grade with working animals. "My daughter is in the fourth grade, while my son is in the first grade. I'm four years old, I can't go to work, because I can't leave my children."
Today it is hard to believe that in Lekas there used to be an eight-year school and a day and night high school, a pharmacy and a hospital.
"There were 8,000 residents in the cooperative. Today, there are only 200 residents left", says a resident.
Efforts to at least keep the school open are strong, but it's not the only thing the villagers are calling for attention. With the harsh winter on the horizon, road congestion awaits; they will also have difficulties with electricity supply, but dreams and hopes die last among the few children left in the village.
