Last night was a difficult and extremely challenging night in the Finiqi area, where fires spread by strong winds have seriously endangered lives, properties and strategic infrastructure in the south of the country.

Through a post on social media on the morning of August 10, Defense Minister Pirro Vengu stated that firefighters from the municipalities of Finiq, Delvinë, Konispol and Saranda, supported by the Armed Forces, the State Police and dozens of volunteers, have been fighting the flames throughout the night to contain the spread of fires in the villages of Velahovo, Livinë, Ardhasovo, Bistrica and Krongj.

According to Vengu, the situation was particularly dangerous in Livina and Ardhasovo, where temporary evacuations of residents were carried out as a preventive measure to protect life.

"Temporary evacuations of residents in Livina and Ardhasovo were carried out, and measures were taken to provide medical assistance to the elderly, while operational and volunteer forces ensured the protection of every endangered home and business," the minister said.

One of the most critical points was the danger that threatened the Bistrica Hydropower Plant, but according to Vengu, the danger was prevented and at this moment, air intervention is expected in this area.

"In the early hours of the morning, a successful operation was carried out to prevent the spread of flames that were endangering the Bistrica Hydropower Plant, where air intervention is also expected at this time."

"For security reasons, the circulation of vehicles on the Muzinë - Bistrica axis will continue to remain limited until the conclusion of the operations," writes the minister, who adds that operational forces continue to work on the ground to control any area that may be reactivated by the wind and high temperatures expected to prevail in the coming hours.
