Meta is left in prison by the GJKKO: I divorced Kryemadhi after his credit cards

The GJKKO leaves Ilir Meta in prison. After SPAK filed new evidence in the GJKKO regarding Meta's case, the latter himself participated in the next session where he requested the replacement of the arrest measure with imprisonment. The defense of the leader of the Freedom Party opposed SPAK's new evidence, removing any responsibility from Meta for lobbying the LSI in the USA.

"There was nothing new in this 31-page material, except that the procedural body was finally convinced regarding the issue of the lobbying company in favor of the Socialist Movement for Integration (LSI) Party, where the person under investigation, Mr. Ilir Metaj, as he had stated, has no connection with the contracts and payments made," said lawyer Kujtim Cakrani in the courtroom.

Regarding the new episode of corruption that SPAK suspects that the former Meta-Kryemadhi couple used a bank card for purchases and expenses abroad provided by businessman Ardian Shatku, Meta's defense 'charged' Kryemadhi with responsibility. Lawyer Kujtim Cakrani said that Meta was not aware of any of Kryemadhi's expenses with these cards. According to the defense, Meta even decided to divorce after one of these cards was found during searches at Kryemadhi's mother's house.

"As a result of this activity and the abusive exercise of power, the parties have benefited from citizen Ardian Shatku and UNIFI, considerable income, including a percentage of the profit as well as the provision by A. Shatku several times with credit cards," the SPAK indictment states.

"This conclusion is completely tendentious since there is no evidence or indication that Mr. Meta was aware of the illegal or legal benefits of his ex-wife from A. Shatku. The reference to the percentage distributions on Ms. Kryemadhi's mobile phone that SPAK claims is up to Ms. Kryemadhi to clarify. Even more tendentious is the prosecutors' attempt to present Mr. Meta as a co-beneficiary or aware of the illegal cards that the indictment alleges, which according to her herself are only in the name of Monika Kryemadhi, who according to SPAK, is also their beneficiary. Mr. Meta was not only unaware of this illegal relationship, but after learning that after the search of Ms. Kryemadhi's mother's apartment, there was such a card, but unused, according to Ms. Kryemadhi, he also decided on a legal divorce with her, assessing it as a serious breach of trust, of the law for an experienced politician, but also to the detriment of his political causes. Mr. Meta was only informed of the use of this card in San Marino by the prosecution in the first hearing after his arrest in Court.

"While for the other two cards, he was only recognized as a defendant on the day of the communication of the indictment on May 27. Likewise, the prosecution itself proves that Monika Kryemadhi is the only user of this card, and in no single case is it proven that Mr. Ilir Metaj has used these," said the Defense.

Ilir Meta's defense denied any connection with businessman Adrian Shatku, Kryemadhi's cousin, who in the voluminous dossier of the former couple appears to be one of the people with an important role in corruption affairs but also in lobbying payments in the US.

"Adrian Shatku is the trusted person of Ilir Meta and Monika Kryemadhi and, according to Fatime Kryemadhi's statement, also their distant cousin," SPAK's indictment states.

"Even this conclusion is tendentious, since the entire investigation shows that Adrian Shatku is a person close to Monika Kryemadhi, a native of Dibra, and Ema Shatku (Çokun), a close friend of Monika. For these reasons, he was a person known and respected by Ilir Meta, but never his confidant nor aware of any illegal or suspicious activity of his.

Since October, Meta has been in prison and is seeking to replace the security measure from arrest to prison with another, more lenient measure, arguing that SPAK violated the law and had not submitted any two-monthly information on the case for 8 months.

Meta has been charged with corruption, money laundering and concealment of assets for the CEZ-DIA files, lobbying in the US and property investigation. The Special Anti-Corruption Prosecution has also charged his ex-wife, Monika Kryemadhi, with the same charges.
