Journalist Ahmet Emre Olur has been extradited to his homeland, after being caught at Rinas airport. Olur requested political asylum in Albania on the grounds that his life was in danger if he was deported, but his request was rejected.
He was deported by the Albanian authorities with the claim that he has exceeded the 2-year deadline to stay in our country. According to his lawyer, they sent some of them to our country for political asylum, but they were not taken into account, on the grounds that the immigration office was closed.
A journalist by profession, Olur claims that he was declared wanted by Turkey after he made several chronicles against the government in Ankara.
The concern is raised by his lawyers Arben Llangozi and Orgesa Serani, where through a letter sent to the Ministry of the Interior, they express the concern of the journalist's family about the detention at Rinas airport and the danger that comes if he is deported to Turkey.
"From the contacts we have had with the family members, they have told us that it is not true that this citizen has stayed in Albania beyond the legal time limit. According to the contacts we have had, we have been told that the citizen Ahmet Emre Olur with passport number U14867557, of Turkish origin, is at risk of life if he were to be deported from our country to his country of origin and this fact will happen based on his political beliefs. And at the same time, he has shown the will to seek political asylum in the Albanian state.
Based on the law with No. 10/2021 "On Asylum in the Republic of Albania", in its article 2 it is clearly defined that this law applies to all foreign citizens and stateless persons, who have declared their intention to submit a request for international protection in the territory of the Republic of Albania, as long as they are allowed to stay in the territory of the Republic of Albania as applicants for international protection, as well as for their family members.
At the same time, based on Article 5 of the law with No. 10/2021 "On Asylum in the Republic of Albania", the right to asylum The Republic of Albania guarantees the right to asylum of foreign citizens or stateless persons who are outside their country of citizenship or outside their previous habitual residence and is unable or unwilling to seek the protection of that country because of a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion.
For the above, we ask the Ministry of the Interior, the Rinas Police Station, the Tirana Police Directorate, the Ministry of Justice and the General Directorate of the State Police to objectively implement the law with No. 10/2021 'On Asylum in the Republic of Albania'", says the official letter.
