Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa, two of the oldest lakes in Europe, lie in a mountainous area along the borders of North Macedonia, Albania and Greece. Lakes have existed for at least 1 million years and possibly longer.

Most of the world's millions of lakes are less than 18,000 years old and were formed when glaciers melted at the end of the last Ice Age.

Ohrid is the largest and deepest of the two, with an average depth of 155 meters. Prespa has an average depth of 14 meters.

Geologists classify 30 lakes in the world as the oldest, Ohrid and Prespa belong to this category.

Lake Ohrid is home to 200 species that are found nowhere else, including unusual snails, ducks and trout.

Lake Ohrid is protected by UNESCO and in some cases has been called the "European Galapagos" or a museum of living fossils because of its extraordinary biodiversity.

In 2010, scientists of the International Astronomical Union gave the name Ohrid to a lake on Titan.
