The former head of the Serious Crimes Prosecution Office, Eugen Beçi, has raised a strong alarm regarding the failure to seize narcotics in the country.
Beçi stated that despite the increase in users, the Albanian police are no longer able to detect any amount of drugs at the borders.
"The Albanian police and law enforcement agencies have no knowledge of the activities of Albanian citizens abroad. We have a legal infrastructure that leaves much to be desired," the former prosecutor told A2 CNN.
According to him, since 2022, no amount of drugs has been seized at the country's main border points.
"We have been discussing for several months how it is possible that no more narcotics are being seized at the Albanian borders. How is it possible that not a single gram, not a kilogram, is being seized at the port of Durres, nor in Gjirokastra or at other border crossing points? There is something wrong here!"
Beçi emphasized that, according to international statistics, only about 10 percent of the drugs in circulation are seized in each country, while the situation in Albania, according to him, is even more serious.
"If we have so many users, how did the drugs they consume come about? Not even law enforcement agencies have an answer to this paradox."
