Journalist: Dritan Rexhepi left after his partner, Ecuador's biggest drug
Journalist Artan Hoxha / Dritan Rexhepi

Investigative journalist Artan Hoxha has commented on the arrest of Dritan Rexhepi, also known as Gramos Rexhepi, one of the most famous Albanian drug traffickers in the world, described as the head of the first Albanian cartel.

Hoxha said that Rexhepi's sentences in many countries go up to a century, while he considered him as a weighty character in the world of narco-trafficking, but not comparable to the heads of cartels in Latin American countries.

In the show "The Unexposed", Hoxha said that Rexhepi has left Ecuador, after the murder of his partner, Ecuador's most important drug trafficker.

"The real name is Gramos Rexhepi, then he changed it to Dritan Rexhepi and then Lulzim Murataj. The news of his arrest was first published by the Turkish interior minister. They had made sure that only Rexhepi appeared. The video was released on the 10 November. In fact, Gramos Rexhepi was captured on Wednesday at 21:00, in Turkey, in a suburban area of Istanbul. He was there with his two minor children and his Colombian wife. The police made sure that his wife and children were not seen in the footage. It is said that he resisted during the detention, but the Turkish forces did not leave him much to resist.

It is a villa that, according to the Turkish authorities, has stayed for more than nine months. A stamp of September 25 was found in his passport, but they suspect that it is forged, they are verifying how he entered and exited. That night on the 8th, another 22 people were arrested in Istanbul, but they were all kept secret. The fact that Gramos Rexhepi was given with such fanfare is because, unlike others, he has been convicted in several EU countries and in Latin America. He received several sentences, escaped from prisons several times. More or less, he committed the most serious crimes in the Criminal Code himself, he did not wait for others to do them. This has completed the components for the minister to release it himself and not leave it to the media.

He appeared in court on Saturday. It will remain available for 90 days, until the extradition documentation requested by Italy and Albania arrives. Italy is the country that tracked him down and found him. The Turks have come with information. Meanwhile, Albania is the place where he wants to come. When he was asked in Ecuador, he signed to come to Albania even though he has the most severe punishments here. The special thing is, from the moment he was detained until now, he has not been allowed to meet the lawyers. The lawyer could not contact him, only in the courtroom, but they said that the translator will be ours.

The Albanian people have an expression, sometimes it's better to stick your eyes out than to be naked. In Albania, he was sentenced to 25 years for murder and four years for forgery and a sentence of 2 years for escape. He was sentenced to 16 years and 5 months for drug trafficking in Italy. There is another sentence in Italy with 20 years in prison. There is another sentence in Belgium. After that there is another sentence in Ecuador, 13 years. He is a man who has received almost a century of punishments. He has been punished in almost every country where he has been active.

Is this trafficker that big? It is definitely not that big, because then we bring down the big cartels, but among the Albanian parties, it is the most well-known and the most convicted. He has trafficked 140 million euros of cocaine for two years. In fact, today there are Albanians who have done more.

There are 14 organizations, but unlike the cartel that has a head, these do not operate as a cartel, it was an alliance that had a supply distributor and this gave it the central figure. The fact that he has been in prison has helped him. He has been in prison in Italy, stayed with famous characters of the Italian mafia. He fled to Italy. He was caught in Spain and extradited to Belgium. He escaped several times.

In Ecuador, he stayed with the boss of the biggest cartel, Zambrano, the man who ran the drug trade in Ecuador from 2008 to 2020.

When Zambrano was killed, Gramoz Rexhepi saw the opportunity to leave. The principle is that if your partner is killed, you must leave, otherwise you will be executed," said Hoxha.
