The American file against former FBI official Charles McGonigal has become the hottest political issue in Albania, after the discovery of his important contacts in Tirana. The investigative show Inside Story brought a detailed analysis of this issue tonight.
The former head of the FBI's counterintelligence office, who retired in 2018, is facing two separate indictments: one in New York and one in Washington, D.C.
In New York, McGonigal is accused of receiving money from an associate of Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, who has been sanctioned by the US since 2018. It is suspected that the former agent received money in order to remove the Russian oligarch's name from list of sanctioned businesses.
This accusation has nothing to do with Albania, apart from the political accusations today.
"Maybe Deripaska's part is only related to guilt or involvement or to the way Mr. McGonigal acted, I think, it is not related to the Albanian part or Mr. Neza or Ducka", said the lawyer, Redi Ramaj
"Being clean and dirtying yourself, your nation for absolutely no reason. Why I say that is because the FBI has investigated it, it means it has sent the charge to court, there is only one defendant and he is the chief detective of the FBI", said lawyer Idajet Beqiri.
Often, the first indictment filed in New York is intentionally confused with the second filed in Washington, where the names of some Albanians are mentioned.
According to this indictment, McGonigal allegedly benefited from an Albanian.
Also, he was paid the expenses for trips to Albania, Kosovo and Bosnia.
Once a close person of Azem Hajdari, Agron Neza's past in the Secret Services
According to the indictment, Mcgonigal received $225,000 in secret payments from a former Albanian intelligence agent. We are talking about citizen Agron Neza, from Tropoja. Once, he was an agent of the Albanian Secret Service. A character who has publicly admitted his closeness to the late Azem Hajdari and former prime minister Sali Berisha.
In fact, Neza himself exposed Berisha as he published old photos with him.
"Neza is from an excellent, good family of Tropoja, but she was a close friend of Azem Hajdar. Agroni, therefore, and Berisha, he knew extremely well", said the lawyer, Idajet Beqiri
With the fall of the communist system, Neza broke away from the intelligence services and became close to Azem Hajdar. There are reports that in 1992 he was detained for 6 months by the Montenegrin authorities and then went to the United States. It is said that he has created various connections. There is evidence that Nezaj often presented himself as an FBI agent. It is not known if he was ever an official associate of this agency, or if he was referring to connections such as that with Agent Charles McGonigal.
"It's a problem that the Intelligence Service should see, investigate that who escaped Agro Neza and threw him in Serbia. He was really in the State Security, he worked because he was trusted by the party, very trusted", said Idajet Beqiri.
Neza's acquaintances among political leaders are manifold. If Sali Berisha denies it, his ally Ilir Meta has accepted acquaintance with Agron Neza.
Agron Neza next to Ilir Meta in the Presidency
The head of the Freedom Party has stated that he knew him through his brother, the late Agim Nezaj. Agimi is remembered as an intellectual, journalist, well-known lecturer and spokesperson in several departments during Berisha's government.
In this photo you see, Agron Nezaj appears next to Ilir Meta when he was president. The photo where they appear together belongs to the month of May 2022 after the decoration ceremony of his brother, the well-known journalist Agim. The late Agim Nezaj is also remembered as Jozefina Topalli's media adviser, during the time when she headed the Assembly.
In fact, Meta's acquaintance with former agent Agron Neza is also confirmed through this photo from 2013. Besides Neza, another former FBI agent Mark Rossini, a friend of Charles McGonigal and at the same time a partner with them in the business they have in Albania. So the acquaintances of McGonigal and his circle with Meta seem to be early, despite denials from the head of the Freedom Party.
But let's return to our topic and clarify the travels to Albania of Charles McGonigal and Agron Nezaj.
The arrested agent met Prime Minister Edi Rama in Tirana. This was a known public fact and the head of government himself admitted it before McGonigal was arrested.
The meeting is said to have been brokered by a well-known figure in lobbying circles. It was about former Deputy Minister of Energy Dorian Ducka. The latter is the close cousin of the head of the Freedom party, Ilir Meta, and it was precisely the latter who made him part of the government cabinet during the coalition period in 2013-2017. As explained in the indictment, Ducka had worked as Rama's external adviser.
