Four Albanians were stopped by the Carabinieri at a highway toll booth, suspected of being part of an organized gang of "hawks".
They are accused of stealing gold and money in Monte San Giusto.
Police said they had committed a burglary in an apartment in Villa San Filippo, but their escape was short-lived. The arrest was made by the carabinieri of Osimo and Civitanova.
Those arrested are Florind Sefaj, Klaudio Demiri, Taulant Zyba and Givson Zyba . Their targets were homes where they believed they had money, gold jewelry or other valuables.
The group's discovery came during another burglary in Monte San Giusto. Taking advantage of the fact that no one was home, a gang forced their way into a house in Villa San Filippo, ransacking the rooms and stealing money and gold.
Unfazed, the criminals opened doors and drawers, searching for jewelry and anything else of value, before fleeing.
Before the owners realized the theft, at around 10:00 p.m., the carabinieri from Osimo, assisted by their colleagues from the Civitanova Company, stopped a Fiat at the Civitanova toll booth on the A14 motorway.
The four Albanians were in the car. However, the search revealed flashlights, gloves, screwdrivers and various burglary tools, and most importantly, jewelry and cash, the origin of which the four were unable to explain.
The four people, who are residents of Abruzzo, will be tried this morning at the Macerata court, following a request from Deputy Prosecutor Stefania Ciccioli. The Carabinieri also searched the homes of the Albanians for further evidence.
