As part of the talks for the "Works of Albania" tour, Prime Minister Edi Rama held a meeting this Friday with pensioners of unit no. 2 in the capital.
"You are the first, the others come behind," with these words Rama addressed the pensioners.
According to the Prime Minister, pensioners and families on economic assistance will be the first to benefit if the government makes a decision to compensate for price increases that may result from the conflict in the Middle East.
"The war in the Middle East, which is reflected in the price of oil, which suddenly jumps beyond any kind of prediction and which we hope that the 15-day ceasefire will lead to a final solution, before the price of oil, the first symptom, then appears in food prices. If it appears in food prices and it is something that we have to deal with, of course the first thing we will think about is you pensioners. Of course, the others come later."
During a meeting with pensioners of unit no. 2 in Tirana, Prime Minister Edi Rama said that a new support scheme is being prepared, based on family expenses on a basket basis.
"Those lekë, which through the card can be spent on basic items in any type of store, at any type of point where food is purchased, should all be VAT-inclusive, so that the VAT, which today is in many cases taken aside by the seller, goes back into the budget and from that budget returns to you, to them, and not be taken and hidden from the state by the seller."
Rama stated that work is being done to deepen the reform in this sector, creating new savings opportunities for citizens, also with the contribution of the state.
"We have also discussed other changes that we will make to the pension scheme, to deepen the pension reform, starting to create another space for all those who want to save more to have a higher pension in the future, where the state will make its contribution."
Intervention is also foreseen for self-employed pensioners.
"We will also review the current scheme for self-employed pensioners and for those who continue to work, as there is room there to make some adjustments, which again go in favor of pensioners. Meanwhile, we have also discussed support for the disabled, who have the right to demand equal treatment."
According to Rama, this category will have priority in government support schemes, while it will also benefit from economic growth that was reflected in the increase in pensions.
