Is it good or bad news that the United States Embassy announced that the American Drug Enforcement Agency, DEA, has opened a new signaling line for Albania directly with citizens.
According to the lawyers, the good lies in the American engagement in the fight against narcotics. But on the other hand, it speaks of a growing concern that Albania has become a stronghold of criminal groups that deal with international drug trafficking.
"It strikes me that Albania has really become a factor in narcotics while we have requests like the one from the DEA, which has been fighting organized crime all along," says lawyer Bledar Meminaj.
DEA It is not enough only with the official partnership to obtain information about traffickers of Albanian origin. The American agency has made available a phone number to contact on Whatsapp and an e-mail address for anyone who has information about drug trafficking or organized crime.
"We also have a question that we raise regarding the functioning of the law enforcement institutions that we have in Albania, including SPAK, which was raised with the main focus against organized crime and high-level corruption," says Meminaj. "So we have dysfunction of this institution, or we have a problem that has arisen over the powers of these structures, and we request cooperation with one of the world's strongest agencies, such as the DEA."
Narcotics traffic from Latin America to Albania is widely used by criminal groups. Only in the port of Durrës during 2021, 11 loads of cocaine with a total weight of 1 ton and 77 kilograms were caught, while in 2022, 3 loads with about 140 kilograms were seized.
In the latest report of the US Department of State, it is stated that the International Narcotics Control Strategy Report 2022 keeps Albania in the category of Top Money Laundering Jurisdictions after its inclusion for the first time in 2017. The category means that the financial institutions of of the country engage in foreign exchange transactions involving significant amounts of revenue from international narcotics trafficking./A2 CNN
