This is a 49-year-old woman from Shkodra who has been raped by her husband for 20 years in a row. Last year the woman, mother of two children experienced a horror after her husband tried to stab her with a knife while he was in an alcoholic state.

The woman, who does not want to be identified, says that her husband has been in prison for a year, but the decision of the three-and-a-half-year sentence by the Court of Appeal has not yet been clarified, as the victim does not even have a protection order according to the Court's arguments the perpetrator is punished.

The 49-year-old woman says that physical and any other form of violence from her husband started after the first week of marriage, but she was forced to endure having no place to go until February 5 of last year when her husband tried to hit her with knife. The abused woman tells how her 14-year-old son was the one who saved the mother from the father by immediately calling the police, as he was trying to shoot her with a knife.

The mother of two children, who has been helped for more than 8 months by the "Woman to Woman" organization, says that she is also homeless. The apartment where she lives today is in the name of her husband's brother, and in the event of a divorce, she has decided to evict her sister-in-law and her children. The woman is afraid that when her husband, with whom she is in the process of divorcing, is released from prison, she is afraid that he may kill her.

Despite all the difficulties she has, the 49-year-old calls on women and girls not to accept being abused by their family members or anyone at any time. Only the "Woman to Woman" association last year treated 725 cases of violence against women and girls in Shkodër.

This number is much higher considering other cases of violence handled by other organizations, the state institutions themselves or even those cases when women and girls fail to report the violence. Cases of domestic violence have increased significantly in recent years./News24
