The spoken Arvanita is in danger of disappearing and the space where the old Albanian is spoken has started to shrink. And in those parts where the early Albanian history and culture was felt, now the Hellenic culture is felt.
"It's definitely wrinkled a lot. Much has been lost from what was spoken 100 years ago," said historian Pëllumb Xhufi for TV Klan.
The reasons are numerous among them, it is the "unfriendly" Greek policy towards the Arvanitas community, up to the lack of action of the Albanian institutions.
"How many places did the people of Arbëresh enter at the level of political conversations, let's say, when they go and have meetings in Italy? I doubt that it will take an important place, if it does not take place at all. There is no question in Greece. A distant and unfriendly attitude of the Greek policy for centuries towards the Albanians has caused the Albanian element to shrink a lot", said Xhufi.
Titos Jochalas is one of the most famous Greek albanologists who has been studying the Arvanite language for 50 years. Even for him this language is wrinkled.
"As you know, the new life, with the social changes, has influenced a lot to lose, not only Arvanitish, but also other languages that were spoken at home... And now, only the language of study remains", said Jochalas.
The alarm about the risk of losing one of the variants of the Albanian language has been raised since 3 decades ago by foreign researchers and that it is necessary to open Albanian schools in these territories first.
